Teasing Chaos

David Tudor (Philadelphia, PA, US, 1926–Tomkins Cove, NY, US, 1996) made a name for himself in the 1950s as a leading pianist specializing in contemporary music. His gift for executing the underdetermined and demanding scores of composers like John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Christian Wolff with their complex and sometimes equivocal instructions was unrivaled. Beginning in the 1960s, Tudor transformed himself into a composer-performer, realizing numerous works that straddled the divisions between composition and performance, object, and installation art. In Teasing Chaos, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg presents a first-ever comprehensive survey of his pioneering achievements in the field of live electronics and his interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists. The exhibition is produced in close cooperation with Composers Inside Electronics (CIE) and complemented by a program of performance events.

A publication accompanying the exhibition will be released in German and English versions.
