Mask and Face

Discussion with Kerstin Stremmel, curator, and John Jacob, founding director of the Inge Morath Foundation.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the Austrian photographer Inge Morath (1923 Graz, AT - 2002 New York, NY, US), the exhibition presents vintage prints from the series "Masks". This group of works was created in collaboration with the draftsman Saul Steinberg (1914 Râmnicu Sărat, RO - 1999 New York, NY, US), whom Morath first visited and portrayed in 1959. At this meeting, Steinberg wore a paper mask with a recorded self-portrait. In the exhibition, some of the original masks, which the Museum der Moderne received as a donation, are on view for the first time together with Morath's photographs, which were taken between 1959 and 1962. This artistic collaboration between Morath and Steinberg is considered one of the most interesting between a draftsman and a photographer; it also marked the beginning of a long-lasting friendship. Steinberg continued to create very different characters on paper bags, which became famous through Morath's photographs.

The discussion is held in english.
With entrance ticket participation is free.
