Szene - Verein zur Förderung der Kultur
For more than 50 years the independent cultural association SZENE Salzburg has been providing important artistic impulses, presenting cross-border art and creating innovative formats in the city of Salzburg. In 1986, SZENE Salzburg moved into the former city cinema in the heart of the Altstadt at Anton-Neumayr-Platz, where it defines its work in four focal points:
The annual Summer Scene Festival sees itself as a platform for contemporary performing arts and brings outstanding international and national artists from the fields of performance, dance, theatre, visual arts and music to Salzburg. In various formats and stages, the invited projects deal with new questions on socio-political themes and social processes and provide impulses for socio-political discourses.
With more than 120 events and over 120,000 visitors per year, the multifunctional event venue offers a diverse range of events in all artistic fields. The heterogeneous programme consists of dance, theatre, lectures, readings, concerts, cabaret, comedy, children's and youth theatre, club formats and dance evenings. The Salzburg Festival, Rockhouse Salzburg, ARGEkultur, the Mozarteum Foundation, SEAD, the tanz_house association, Altstadt Marketing with Jazz & The City, the Literaturfest and many more are among the continuous cooperation partners and organisers. You can find the current programme here.
On a local level, SZENE Salzburg supports artistic creation processes and offers rehearsal and production opportunities. A studio on the third floor of the building is made available free of charge to freelance artists, which also offers the possibility of public showings.
In 2000, SZENE Salzburg initiated the European network apap - advancing performing arts project, which operates internationally. Since 2012, the festival Performing New Europe, which takes place in January, has been part of the European network apap - advancing performing arts project. Together with ten other European partners, SZENE Salzburg will realise the current Performing Europe 2020 programme from 2016 to 2020.
In addition, the gastronomy integrated into the SZENE offers one of the city's most popular meeting places.
