Manu Delago & Douglas Dare

Manu Delago: percussion | Douglas Dare: piano | Both the percussionist Manu Delago and pianist Douglas Dare live in London and met for the first time at a studio recording. They composed and produced pieces together for the Lockdown Sessions and are now celebrating their live premiere as duo at Jazz & The City. Here floating handpan sounds combine with lyrical songwriting and powerful drums with opulent piano playing. A musical journey between pop, global music, and improvisation with two charismatic performers.

Artist biography Manu Delago

After teenage years defined by rock and a classical training as a percussionist, the Tyrolean Manu Delago discovered the hang in 2003, a percussion instrument invented in Switzerland which looks like a wok and generates all possible sounds and went on to become its greatest virtuoso. What sounds a little like electronic music is played only acoustically and mostly also improvised. His 2011 solo piece “Mono Desire” remains one of the top 30 best rated music videos on YouTube. Resident in London for already many years, Delago has performed with stars such as Björk, Olafur Arnalds and the London Symphony Orchestra as well as with his own ensemble.

Artist biography Douglas Dare

Douglas Dare grew up on a farm as the youngest of a big family. Even as a child he lived a little in his own world and liked to dance in his mother’s pink ballet dress. His father is a piano teacher and so he was born with a love of music and studied at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Dare, who is openly gay, also has a drag persona under the name Visa Reasons. His EP debut was released in 2013 on Erased Tapes and soon after he toured through Europe with his label colleague Ólafur Arnalds. In the following year his debut album Whelm was released after which Nils Frahm took him with him on his North American tour. With, meanwhile, two further albums, Dare has established himself as one of the most interesting British songwriters.
