North Sea String Quartet

George Dumitriu: violin | Pablo Rodríguez: viola | Yanna Pelser: viola | Thomas van Geelen: cello |

Chamber jazz, folk-fusion, world music improvisation – the North Sea String Quartet from Rotterdam has already experienced many definition attempts. Ultimately, no-one really quite manages to capture their compositions which are inspired by classic, world, folk and jazz music and are always open to the improvisation of violinist George Dumitriu and Pablo Rodríguez as well as Yanna Pelser on the viola and Thomas van Geelen on the cello. Using new playing techniques, they transpose music to a string quartet format of which no-one would think it possible. They do so alone as well as in collaborations initiated by them, for example with Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira, American singer and violinist Roland Satterwhite and Canarian guitarist Javier Infante and most recently with the Trio da Kali from Mali with which the North Sea String Quartet is regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative acts of their kind.
