Klima Kalima

Kalle Kalima: guitar | Oliver Potratz: double bass | Oliver Steidle: drums | When the Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima moved to Berlin more than 20 years ago, he found the first like-minded people for his trio in double-bass player Oliver Potratz and drummer Oliver Steidle. Since then, the trio Klima Kalima has been on a musical journey from rock, blues and folk to free jazz which always sounds out the players’ boundaries of musical possibilities and which has, not least through a humorous, quirky Finnish characteristic, developed its very own sound. The reward for all this has been the highest praise for their five albums and prizes including the New German Jazz Award. The new project “Voyagers Blues” is inspired by the space probe of the same name. The band offers a soundtrack to an imaginary film on the dying and increasingly lonely probes.

Artist biography Kalle Kalima

Thanks to his distinctive, ever-avant-garde sound, the Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima who has lived in Berlin since 1998 has long been a part of Europe’s jazz elite. Hereby the diversity of his medium is almost limitless. His stylistic palette ranges from the fusion experiments of his own formation Klima Kalima to the pop jazz anarchy of the band Kuu!; from the song repertoire with the Soi Ensemble to the free jazz band K 18 and from the classic-crossover of his Kallephil project to the global jazz of the A Novel of Anomaly quartet. He nurtures a special preference for American roots music which he has already presented in two country jazz projects of the Austrian drummer Alfred Vogel and, in particular, in his own trio with various line-ups, the Long Winding Road.

Artist biography Oliver Potratz

Oliver Potratz, aged 50 years, started out on the violin and e-bass before moving on to the double bass when he was 20 to then study classical as well as jazz double bass, in Berlin. His musical horizon is accordingly broad: he has played in classic orchestras and with stars such as Rolando Villazon and Tim Fischer, produced and composed audio dramas and film music (for example “Babylon Berlin”) and directed projects such as “Safar - Music from Afghanistan” as well as the “Kosmostage Festival”. In jazz, meanwhile, he can be heard on 60 CDs and with a wide range of musicians such as Christopher Dell, Gerd Dudek, Daniel Erdmann, Michel Godard, Christof Lauer and Almut Kühne and with bands like Shake Stew, Klima Kalima as well as the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra.

Artist biography Oliver Steidle

Oliver Steidle who comes from Nürnberg and has been living in Berlin since 2000 became popular as the drummer of Der Rote Bereich. Today he is one of the most in-demand drummers in progressive jazz. The German Jazz Award winner has his own projects such as SoKo Steidle, Die dicken Finger, as well as his duo with the recently-deceased free jazz master Peter Brötzmann and the Boltzmann Killing Popes. Steidle intertwines the finesse of jazz drum playing with the rawness and force of the music which defined his youth: punk, grind core, hip hop und other “stuff which – like jazz in its best years – kicks you strongly and socio-critically in the shin,” as he explains.
